LinkRisk wins Best SEO Software at the UK Search Awards

Last Thursday at the UK Search Awards in London we were hugely proud to be awarded the Best SEO Software award for 2014. We were up against some amazing pieces of software and Link Research Tools 🙂

LinkRisk was by far the newest company nominated in the category (the others being our good friends Majestic, Linkdex, AnalyticsSEO & Searchmetrics as well as the very impressive people at Creare, Barracuda Digital & DeepCrawl)

We would like to take this opportunity to thank some people and then,  as founders, we would like to share some of our thoughts about the journey so far for LinkRisk as a company.

First off we would like to thank our amazing team, Heather, Sean, Rhydian & Chris. Without your commitment and brilliance we would not have the product we have today.

Id also like to take the chance to thank our customers for your faith in us as a product and your kind words and contribution to building a suite that has helped thousands of sites improve their chances of success online.

It also goes without saying that our partners and the industry as a whole have played a big role in helping shape the product, from allowing us to work with you on new features and tech to simply helping us spread the word. We remain focussed on serving those people who care about their sites and clients and remaining firmly on the side of the site owner that keeps our product developing in the way that it has.

Whilst Dom and I were unable to attend the awards evening (we are currently on a push to build the LinkRisk brand in the US and business came before fun as always) we watched the evening from afar with envy. Nicky, Dan and the team at Don’t Panic put on another amazing event by all accounts. In many ways putting 3000 miles between Dom and Jackie’s Karaoke was the least I could do!


At times like this I like to pause and take stock so I have asked each of our founders to take a moment to share their thoughts on where we came from and the journey to date. My turn first: –

I have been in and around SEO and link building for well over 10 years and making money from online ventures since the late 90’s. When the first Google Penguin hit in April 2012 I realised that I needed to understand the risk as well as the reward of every link I had placed or planned to place in the future.

I registered LinkRisk and started thinking through how I could build something that addressed the issue. Even though I had a reputation for automation and doing things at scale it was pretty evident that to match the ambition of that initial idea I couldn’t do it alone. I therefore went to chat to my good friend Dom who at the time was finishing his involvement in a startup that dealt with advertising data at large scale. Around that time I was also in the process of completing a deal to work closer with someone I had respected for many years, Gareth Hoyle. Gareth and I had both spent the previous few years building large offshore teams for link building and data and so combining our experience seemed logical. Gareth brought drive, direction and helped supplement the initial seed capital I had already allocated.

LinkRisk remains a business with no debt and trading at a profit from those early days to today. We don’t believe in diluting the equity to build without a clear commercial offering. We wish to remain independent and able to clearly dictate the direction of the business.

We make a great team.

Dom heads up our development teams as CTO and has delivered a business at scale for a fraction of the cost of our competition whilst still providing a product that innovates with every update.

Gareth heads up our marketing effort and keeps the commercial side of the business running like clockwork.

I head up the strategy for the business and help direct the operations day to day. The LinkRisk algorithm sits on my desk, although it has to be said it wouldn’t be the unique and accurate score it is without the mathematical genius of Dr Heather who’s maths PHD has helped us turn ideas into a consistent score.

I have been working in SEO and specifically links for more years than I care to remember. My first commercial SEO work was around 2004 and I have built a number of online based companies since then. As Paul previously mentioned, I have spent the last 7 years building a large offshore team to aid the link building strategies of agencies and brands across the world – then Google’s first Penguin update came along and really shook up my main income earning business.

Rather than sitting around in denial, I spoke to a few peers in the industry to gauge their thoughts on it and it was then that Paul mentioned his idea for LinkRisk to me. I was instantly interested.

Utilising my position within the search industry, alongside my ability to write a large cheque to get the project off the ground, I really felt that the concept was a viable and scalable business with a clearly defined revenue stream. The sort of business I like to be involved in!

The last 2 years have been an amazing ride – We have built the initial audit functionality out to be the market leading link audit tool around and we have built a number of amazing apps off the back of the data we have gathered and the feedback we have had from you, our clients – both agency and brand side. We are product rather than sales focussed which means our products have to stand alone and attract customers based on their feature set – which they do! We can give pretty much every website owner a business reason to use each and every one of our apps.

When two years ago I sat with Paul and over dinner discussed the first implementation of LinkRisk, I knew we were building something exciting but to be recognised as the UK’s Best SEO Software certainly wasn’t expected.  LinkRisk has grown from a single application that will audit your link profile, to a suite of applications designed to work together to manage your online marketing campaign. My role is to constantly look forward technically and strategy and product and I’m very much looking forward to some of the things on our whiteboard launching to the public.

From my point of view, Thanks to my cofounders, development team and my lead developer (and wife) for helping us get our first (of many) awards.

In conclusion

Our ongoing vision for the suite is to continue to add world class and innovative features (one going live in the coming days!), to listen and adapt and to continue to fight to help our customers improve their chances online. We are on your side, thanks for believing in us.
